hi everyone an kler here with a new
0:11
video tutorial and today I'm going to
0:13
show you how to make a really easy
0:15
Journal binding so this binding will
0:18
work for a journal which the pages are
0:22
bound back to back that means that each
0:25
page is folded in half and the pages are
0:28
glued together back to to back and it
0:31
will work with any size
0:34
Journal so the thing we're going to do
0:38
is make a cover the cover is called
0:42
Breakaway
0:44
spine and it will only work on books
0:47
that are already bound this is bound
0:50
with a backtack system meaning the pages
0:53
are glued together back to back they're
0:55
folded in half and glued back to back
0:59
and and once they're attached we can go
1:02
ahead and make the Breakaway spine so
1:05
first I want to reinforce The Binding
1:08
and the spine with a piece of bandage I
1:12
get my bandages from just a local
1:15
pharmacy you can also use a cheese cloth
1:18
to do this so I apply
1:22
glue to the
1:25
spine this is basically where all the
1:28
folded edges are are aligned and glued
1:33
together and I'm using white glue liquid
1:36
tacky glue of course liquid white
1:39
glue I'm just
1:42
applying the glue you can do this with a
1:44
brush if you
1:46
want just make sure there is a nice
1:48
amount of glue there and slightly
1:52
going on the first and last pages just
1:57
ever so slightly
2:00
now I'm going to take a piece of bandage
2:03
and attach
2:05
it to my spine this will really
2:09
reinforce the attachment between the
2:12
pages that like I said are backto back
2:18
glued we have already used this um
2:22
binding system and all kinds of mini
2:24
albums and mini books and so on
2:29
just going to trim the edge because it's
2:32
not straight enough and then I'm just
2:34
going to attach
2:36
it along the spine like
2:43
this and then cut off the edge and if
2:48
there is an excess of little threads or
2:50
something like that then you should cut
2:52
that off too because we don't want all
2:55
those threads to show obviously
3:01
this will really reinforce the
3:04
spine it works like a
3:08
fabric if you have
3:11
a paper that is lined with fabric that
3:16
will also work like a book binding
3:22
paper just going to
3:24
trim the edges on the sides I don't need
3:27
those
3:30
the bandid should be glued slightly over
3:33
the pages but not more than maybe
3:36
quarter of an inch that will be enough
3:40
so the rest can be cut
3:45
off so we're going to sit let the sit
3:50
and
3:51
dry set that aside for a minute
4:00
and then I'm going to show you how to
4:02
create your Breakaway
4:05
spine so first we need to
4:08
measure the thickness of the book or the
4:12
spine the spine is is going to be in
4:15
this binding method the spine is going
4:17
to be higher than the front of the pages
4:21
so always when you measure the height of
4:24
the book or the thickness measure the
4:27
spine so this is almost 1 and A2 in each
4:31
book is going to be obviously
4:34
different so what we're going to do is
4:37
cut a piece
4:39
of thin cardboard
4:43
or heavy card stock or even thin
4:48
chipboard we're going to cut it at the
4:50
width of our book which was 1 and 1/2
4:56
in and the length of the book which in
5:00
my case is 8
5:03
in so you have to measure the
5:06
width the length and the
5:11
thickness so the height is 8
5:17
in so that should be the thickness of
5:20
the book which is 1 and 1/2
5:24
in and the height of the book which is 8
5:28
in so your book might be different sizes
5:32
obviously then we're going to bring a
5:35
piece of card stock or pattern paper or
5:39
if you have a book binding uh lined
5:42
paper like I said
5:44
before any type will work you can even
5:47
use just regular fabric for this just if
5:50
you have a nice fabric piece of fabric
5:54
scrap or something like that then it
5:57
will work as well
6:00
I'm just going to use black card stock
6:02
now we are going to
6:05
add about 1 and 1/2 in to the
6:09
width so if it was 1 and 1/2 in in wide
6:14
we're going to make it around 3
6:17
in and then half an inch on each side of
6:20
the length excuse me that means if it
6:23
was 8 in we're going to cut it 9 in
6:30
then we are going to
6:32
attach our first spine piece in the
6:36
center of our paper or
6:41
fabric you should use liquid glue for
6:45
that why glue will be the best of
6:48
course so that should be aligned with
6:51
both the sides and the top and the
6:56
bottom and now we are going to fold the
6:59
top and the bottom I'm just going to
7:01
crease a fold
7:04
line
7:06
to with my bone folder want to make sure
7:09
it's straight so I'm using a ruler we're
7:13
going to fold it like this and glue it
7:18
down again fabric will work really well
7:21
here as well so apply
7:27
glue and then fold
7:30
and make sure it is completely
7:34
attached like this I'm always
7:39
reinforcing with my bone folder can use
7:42
your fingers for
7:49
that
7:51
okay so now we need to create fold lines
7:55
along the center where our p piece or
8:00
card stock piece or chipboard piece is
8:03
that is going to be folded as
8:06
well and I always like to fold it
8:10
towards the inside and the outside this
8:12
is going to be a
8:15
joint so should go both
8:24
ways like this on each side
8:33
and then you
8:35
measure from the edge of the white
8:39
chipboard or card stock whatever you
8:42
used you measure about half an
8:46
inch and then you
8:48
draw a line or Mark a line with your
8:52
bone folder because we're going to apply
8:55
glue only to the edge so the half inch
8:59
from that Center piece to the line is
9:03
going to be glue
9:05
free and that is the Breakaway spine
9:09
because it's not attached to the
9:15
spine so that's going to make sense in a
9:19
minute so I'm only going to apply glue
9:22
from The Edge to the line to that line
9:26
that I made with my bone folder or the
9:29
you marked with a pencil the/ in line
9:33
that is the only place I'm going to
9:36
apply glue from The Edge to the line on
9:40
both
9:47
sides and then the entire Center is
9:50
going to have no glue at all and it's
9:52
going to move
9:54
freely and break away from the
9:57
spine that is why it's called break a
10:00
away
10:04
spine just making sure that all the
10:08
corners have glue on
10:10
them so I'm going to place my book on
10:14
that white piece of card
10:17
stock and then
10:20
fold the paper on both sides and make
10:23
sure it is completely
10:27
attached of course it's also also should
10:30
be aligned with the top and the
10:37
bottom and then after it's dry I can
10:41
show you the effect of the Breakaway
10:52
spine it's not dry yet so it's
10:55
moving but you get the idea that's where
10:59
a few more seconds until it's dry in the
11:02
meantime you can go ahead and cut two
11:05
pieces to attach to your front and back
11:09
covers to cover
11:16
that uh end of the black card stock you
11:21
can use fabric here you can use pattern
11:24
papers you can use white card stock that
11:27
you add paint to it sprays whatever you
11:32
want it will reinforce the
11:35
cover and make it look prettier and much
11:39
more professional so I'm just going to
11:41
cut two pieces again depending on the
11:44
size of your book they should be the
11:47
exact length of the book which in my
11:50
case is 8
11:52
in and then since my width of the book
11:56
is 5 in I would make it
11:59
around 4 or 4 and 1/2
12:03
in
12:04
so again depending on the size of your
12:10
book I'm just going to use white
12:14
paper that maybe later I'm going
12:21
to add something to
12:23
it so this is you see this is 5 in it's
12:28
obviously two wide so I'm just going to
12:30
make it 4 in you can make it 4 and
12:34
1/2 whatever you
12:38
want in the meantime the Breakaway spine
12:42
is
12:48
drying make sure it's 8 in
12:52
long then I can go ahead and attach
12:57
it again you can use fabric you can use
12:59
pattern paper you can use whatever paper
13:02
that you
13:03
want and I'm just going to glue it
13:08
down I haven't thought of what I wanted
13:12
my how I want my front and back to look
13:15
so that is why I'm using white paper
13:18
I'll have to think about it and then add
13:22
something but we'll
13:24
see excuse me the most important thing
13:28
here is to to make the cover like we
13:33
did so I'm attaching it aligning it with
13:36
the front and back
13:39
covers and then my art Journal book will
13:43
be completely
13:45
bound I really like how this turned out
13:48
and the Breakaway spine allows me to
13:52
really have a flexible
13:56
cover and almost flat
14:00
it will lie almost flat when I open the
14:03
book and go through the pages I'm going
14:05
to show you in a
14:12
minute so let's attach this
14:17
piece and then I will show you how that
14:23
works this Pine is supposed to be dry
14:25
now so I hope
14:30
okay looks really
14:33
pretty so now when I open it you can
14:36
see how it
14:39
works the spine breaks away and allows
14:42
you complete flexibility when you go
14:45
through the
14:47
pages so they can be flat when you open
14:51
them Isn't that cool so I really hope
14:55
you like this tutorial and this binding
14:57
method
14:59
and now we can go ahead and start a
15:02
completely new art Journal thank you
15:05
very much for joining me and I will see
