Let Your Heart Set Sail Mixed Media Canvas

Hi dear crafty friends!Today I want to share with you my new creation: Let Your Heart Set Sail Mixed Media Canvas. Is it clear I’m in a summer mood? Personally there isn’t a lot I like about summer because it’s hot and humid, at least here. But One thing I do love…the sea. The colors of the water, the sand, the wind, the seashells…it’s all magical to me.  Let Your Heart Set Sail Mixed Media CanvasThis canvas was inspired by the Lindy’s Stamp Gang June Challenge. I used two of the colors in the challenge.   First I sprayed the canvas with colors of sea and sand. I used the South Shore sand and other yellow shades for the beach and Shabby Turbine Teal  along with other teal and blue shades for the sea and skies. Then I added texture with pieces of gauze I sprayed with the sand and water colors. The next step was to create the realistic look of the beach, …

Inside: 4 ways to make watercolor backgrounds for beginners   Ny favorite roller coaster is Thunder Mountain in Disney World. Not because it’s the best in the world but because it’s mild and not too scary. Yes, I don’t like roller coasters, they scare me so I don’t get up on them, I only compromise on the less scary ones. But when it comes to crafting I don’t get scared I can angry. If there is something I never did because I was too scared to fail at it I usually do it anyway because I don’t like failing and I don’t like to miss out.   This is what happened to me with watercolors. I was too scared to try them at first because I don’t know how to draw and I never learned any watercolor techniques. But that made me mad…why shouldn’t I give up on this unique paints? I shouldn’t!     HOW TO USE WATERCOLORS …

LOVE Mixed Media Canvas

Hi dear crafty friends! I have a new project to share with you. It’s a LOVE Mixed Media Canvas I created with the photos of my husband and boys. I was inspired by More than Words June challenge that seems to be created just for me: Father and Steampunk. LOVE Mixed Media Canvas It’s clear that this theme is totally me so I just had to create something. I usually create mixed media canvases in a steampunk style without photos, so my problem was how to incorporate photos in this canvas. I decided that close up photos would be the best but I had to cut them from different photos so the colors didn’t match. So I first turned them into black and white photos and after I printed them on regular, not photo paper I want over them with a few colors of distress ink to give them the same color as the metal. The creation process of this canvas …

How to Create an Art Journal Page with Texture

Hi dear crafty friends!Today I want to share with you How to Create an Art Journal Page with Texture. I get a lot of questions about texture in art journaling. The problem with art journaling is that unlike a canvas you can’t really add very bold texture or you will not be able to close your journal. However, having said that, you absolutely can and should add texture to your pages!  How to Create an Art Journal Page with TextureFirst I want to explain the term texture. Contrary to what you might think there are TWO types of texture: texture you can feel with your fingers or tactile texture and the other kind is visual texture, the texture you can see with your eyes. Most of the texture we add to art journaling pages is visual: patterns of all kinds, layers of color, images and bold shapes. However, it is possible to add tactile texture too, only while baring in mind it …

Steampunk Altered Box Tutorial

Hi dear crafty friends! How long can I go without creating a steampunk project? Apparently not long! Today I’m sharing my Steampunk Altered Box Tutorial. I’m surprised how versatile steampunk can be because it seems like all steampunk projects are the same but I always find new ways and embellishments to add so each project will look different.  Steampunk Altered Box TutorialOne important principle of creating a steampunk project in the way I do it is to cover the surface you’re working on with black gesso. Since you’re going to have a dark color scheme the best background will be black and not white.  After the box is dry I like to add texture with modeling paste and stencils. Then I arrange all the embellishments on the box. Try to give the elements height by adding pieces of chipboard. If all the elements are at the same height your project will look a little flat and you don’t want that.   I think you know …

How to Create a Clean Look in Your Art Journal

There is a misconception that art journal pages should be busy, with lots of colors and packed with techniques. But I want to show you How to Create a Clean Look in Your Art Journal. An art journal page can be simple and clean with a lot of white space as long as you like it. Here is how you can create such a page in your art journal:   How to Create a Clean Look in Your Art Journal   The best material to use in my opinion is water colors. Water colors have a transparent soft look that is perfect for a clean look yet colorful. I didn’t have anything in mind when I started the page. I just took my water brush and started adding color to the page.     Usually at this point I get an idea of how I want to continue. But if I don’t I simply add more color or shapes. Sooner …
